ஞாங்கர்க்குடி நிறை வல்சிச் செஞ்சால் உழவர்

Beyond the fertile lands, where homes brim with grain, seasoned farmers plough with skill.

They yoke great oxen, well-trained to walk straight, right at their front yards.

பிடிவாய் அன்ன மடிவாய் நாஞ்சில்

Their curved ploughs, like the mouths of cow-elephants with lizard-like iron heads, plunge deep into the soil.

உடுப்பு முகமுழுக் கொழு மூழ்க ஊன்றித்,   

They sow and re-plough, loosening the field, weeding as they go.

தொடுப்பு எறிந்து உழுத துளர்படு துடவை

At harvest time, disturbed by noise, the birds fly away.

Their chicks, soft like fragrant kadamba blooms,

Quails with short legs and dark throats,

வன்புலம் இறந்த பின்றை 

flee to the scrub forests beyond the woodland border
